"I’m a Communications Assistant in the Cabinet Office and that involves me helping not only with the administration side, like managing people's diaries, but I also help with the campaigns team: I help organise events like Civil Service Live, I help with the press team, pitching ideas to newspapers, so there’s a big varied range in what I do.
I joined the scheme because I spent quite a few months at school not really knowing what I wanted to do and after dragging my parents round a lot of universities, I realised it wasn’t for me. And that’s when I started to look at alternatives, like this apprenticeship, and so much about it just really appealed to me, from the salary to the real work experience that you get and the responsibility and the opportunities.
The Civil Service is so broad - I really thought that it would be great for my career. The best thing I’ve done was helping out at an awards ceremony for smart working, and that was amazing. I helped with the live tweeting at the conference, and I got to talk to lots of interesting people. Just the amount of opportunities that I’ve had since I’ve been here - every day I’m doing something different, and I really think there’s so much potential within the Civil Service to really flourish, and I think it’s an amazing career to have.
There’s so much I like about being a civil servant. I really feel that I make a difference. I think the work I carry out and the work I do really does affect the public. And I think it’s nice at the end of the day to know that you’ve made a difference.
